This wonderful comment from Daniel Woo has inspired me to include a lovingkindness meditation as step #7 (see previous post) in the Italian Espresso Ceremony.

” Every morning I make my own drip coffee, grinding the beans I want to use. Then when I have my first sip, I take time to contemplate the fact that I am not responsible for this cup and I give thanks to the sun & moon, the rains and seasons, the coffee plants and the fauna helping them propogate, the humans and animals that may be involved in their care, harvesting, bagging, transportation, sorting, etc., all the way to my kitchen. I give similar thanks for the tap water coming out of my faucets (I use Seattle tap water) and for the cup that I hold in my hands. These contemplations are reminders for me of the interdependence of nature and of all sentient beings and of the universal energies that are inhaled and sipped.”

I love this – I’ve been creating a similar practice for myself. I am in a deeply ingrained habit of reading while I eat. I’ve been stopping myself to put my hands over my food, send Reiki and honor the long journey from essence to my table. I’m not perfect about remembering. Sometimes I’m halfway through my meal before I remember. When I do, though, this practice slows me down, brings forth the heart of gratitude. Nice to meet you and learn about your blog. thanks
Kathy, thanks for your comment. it is a wonderful journey we are on! Who knows where it will lead us? Ross
That’s beautiful – and highly inspiring.
Kathy, I do like your way of giving thanks – I may have to adopt it
I’ve been doing my best to be mindful in the small things – using all my senses to explore the moment. I figure if I can be more mindful in the small moments, the bigger ones may follow. Even if they don’t, it’s still a good habit. It’s incredible how velvet-like water feels when you wash your hands!
Even when I order coffee at a coffee shop, I’ll do this. Changes the day in an instant.
